Incorporating the latest in rendering and construction methods, the DDP project in Seoul was the first public project in Korea to use 3D Building Information Modelling. Parametric modeling software was used extensively in order to meet the project’s design requirements. The external landscape of the Park transforms Seoul into a greener city by folding into the internal shopping/dining areas below. DDP is the first public project in Korea to implement advanced 3-dimensional digital construction services that ensure the highest quality and cost controls. Throughout the Dongdaemun Design Plaza design process, every building requirement was considered as a set of inter-related spatial relationships which will define the social interactions and behavioural structure in/around the project. These relationships became the framework of the design, defining how different aspects of the project, such as spatial organization, programmatic requirements, and engineering come together. The British Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid designed the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a marvelous structure. Dubbed the 'largest three-dimensional atypical structure in the world', the undulating aluminium and concrete landmark comprises galleries, event spaces, design shops and lawns that rise up to its roof. The attached Dongdaemun History & Culture Park includes museums that highlight past uses of this area, such as a 16th-century military camp. The completed façade incorporates a field of pixilation and perforation patterns, which creates dynamic visual effect depending on the lighting conditions and seasonal changes. Later, it was once again renamed to the Dongdaemun Sports Complex, but its utilization decreased following the construction of the Jamsil Sports Complex in preparation for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Situated in Dongdaemun, Dongdaemun-gu, an ancient fortress wall, once served as a protective barrier for Hanyang, the capital of Chosun. Illicit residential development and unsanctioned post-Korean War construction perpetuated the erosion of the wall's remaining structure. When the DDP was being built way back in 2010, there were no other structures in the world available on which to base its design. Beyond that, it would’ve taken at least 20 years to make all 45,133 panels, using the existing production and installation methods of the time. This hall is easiest found when you’re down on the B1 floor of the structure.
The Dongdaemun History Museum imaginatively displays the pick of the 575 artefacts from the site and provides historical background to the ancient foundations preserved outside. The Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial relives key moments from the stadium’s history and includes video clips. Earlier in the century, these two gates also surrounded the walls of Seoul city.
